Assalaamu Alaikum (Greetings of Peace):
This is coming to our readers from the DFW area of Texas. I arrived last night for the final hours leading up to tomorrow's very important SUPPORT RALLY for a political prisoner, and sister-in-Islam, Dr. Aafia Siddiqui. (A Flyer featuring the Logos of the Sponsoring Organizations for this particular mobilization is attached.)
For those of you in Texas who may be just hearing about this political prisoner for the first time, and are wondering who she is, and how she came to be imprisoned on a military base in Texas, what follows is a summary of Aafia's case.
A Case Summary on Dr. Aaafia Siddiqui
· Aafia Siddiqui came to the U.S. from Karachi, Pakistan in 1990. She was just 18 years old – full of hope, promise, and expectation.
· After spending a highly distinguished freshman year at the University of Houston (right here in Texas), Aafia received a full scholarship to Boston'sMIT. After graduating with honors from MIT she went on to Brandeis University where she acquired a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience.
· Aafia was an active member of the Muslim Students Association (MSA) at all three universities; she engaged in exemplary community service work, with special emphasis on Da’wah and Humanitarian Relief.
· In 2002, after 12 fruitful years in the United States, Dr. Siddiqui returned home to Karachi, Pakistan with her family – a husband and two small children (she was pregnant with a third child).
· In March 2003, Dr. Siddiqui and her three young children (ages six, four, and six months) were the targets of a rendition operation (kidnapped and disappeared) in her home city of Karachi – targeted victims of former U.S. vice-president Dick Cheney’s “One Percent Doctrine.”
· In the summer of 2008, Aafia Siddiqui mysteriously reappeared on the streets of Afghanistan in a weakened and disheveled state. She was taken to a police compound, subsequently shot in the stomach, and then returned to America (in violation of Afghan sovereignty and international law) barely clinging to life.
· When Dr. Aafia Siddiqui was charged in U.S. federal court in New York City, NOT ONE TERRORISM CHARGE appeared in the indictment. She was charged with attempting to murder US personnel (American soldiers and FBI) in Afghanistan in 2008 – five years after she was targeted for rendition. It should also be noted that the FIVE MISSING YEARS (2003 – 2008) were ordered off-limits by the presiding judge, Richard Berman, during the trial.
· Despite all of the evidence in her favor, and the FACT that no one was injured but her, Dr. Aafia Siddiqui was found guilty on all counts of the indictment, and received a sentence of 86 YEARS! This well-educated and committed Muslimah – who also happens to be a hafiza of Qur’an – now exists in solitary confinement in an institution known as FMC Carswell in Fort Worth, Texas.
Former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark, now 87 years old and still active around the world, described the case of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui as, “The worst case of individual injustice that I have ever witnessed.” The purpose of tomorrow’s mobilization is to demand accountability for Aafia’s treatment – to demand that her HUMAN RIGHTS be respected (even as an unjustly held prisoner of war)!

Special Note: The rally will run from 1:00 to 3:00 tomorrow afternoon – JUST 2 HOURS! Buses are expected to depart from IANT in Richardson, and the Islamic Center of Irving, at 12 noon. Folks will also be car-pooling from these two locations. For those driving, the street leading up to the base (i.e. the rally point) is located near a Quik Trip Service Station on Westworth Blvd.
