Aafia movement goes global: Fire brigade named after Aafia saves lives in Syria
Karachi: Pakistani woman scientist Dr Aafia Siddiqui has become a global icon for the human rights, and now a fire brigade service named after her is saving lives in war-torn Syria. A release of Aafia Movement Pakistan here Tuesday said a NGO of South Africa has promised 100 ambulances for this Syrian project for humanitarian cause and few have already been delivered. Last day they were stopped at the Turkish border but later allowed to enter Syria and take part in saving lives. To express solidarity with Dr Aafia Siddiqui the NGO has written the name of Aafia on their fire tenders. This gesture of solidarity with Aafia is yet another proof of widening global support for the cause of Pakistani mother.
The volunteers of Global Aafia Movement are playing their role against injustice and tyranny in different parts of the world. They raise strong voice for the human rights, as well as, rights of women and prisoners and separated families. At present, Global Aafia Movement has volunteers in more than 30 countries including South Africa, Zambia, Turkey, UK, USA and France. The volunteers of Aafia Movement are just not limited to the cause of Aafia but also raise strong voice against all sorts of cruelties, discriminations and violations of the human rights in any part of the country. They have already raised voice for the cause of US army soldier BradleyEdward Manning and civil liberties lawyer Lynne Stewart.
Pakistani mother Dr Aafia Siddiqui was abducted in 2003 from Karachi along with her three minor children. She along with her children was trafficked and put in different detention centers and torture camps. When a British journalist broke the story about her imprisonment in an Afghanistan detention center, she was shifted to the United States of America where a court handed her a sentence for 86 years. Out of her three trafficked kids, two were found, while one is still missing.
Dr Aafia has already spent more than 10 years in different detention centers. Various governments of Pakistan pledged publically to take efforts for her release and repatriation, but no one can materialize these promises. The present government of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on the directions of Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif has also formed a committee for the release of Aafia; however, its snail-paced progress is a matter of grave concern for the nation.
Aafia Movement leader Dr Fowzia Siddiqui has requested the governments of Pakistan and the US to release and repatriate Aafia on the humanitarian grounds so that she could spend the coming Eid with her children and family.
