Eid al-Fitr 1435
It is now more than eleven years since Aafia has been able to break her fast with anything other than scraps of prison food. This food probably does meet the barest standards to be called halal, but you would never serve it to your guests or your family.
Around the world there are many people, both Muslim and non-Muslim, who are victims of injustice. Aafia is only one among many. Almost as if on cue, unidentified individuals shot down a passenger airplane in the Ukraine killing all three hundred people on board, and the Israeli army began an invasion of the Gaza.
If these incidents hadn't happened, we could have found others in the news. Injustice is just not that hard to find. In most of these cases all we can do is pray for the victims. But today there is something you can do for Aafia.
An online petition has been posted at the White House website asking for Aafia's release and return to Pakistan. If 100,000 people sign the petition it will be presented to President Obama.
Numbers matter to politicians. Bigger numbers are more important than smaller numbers. Even if President Obama chooses not to act on it, all those signatures will tell him that Dr. Aafia is important to a lot of people.
If 100,000 people sign this it will get his attention.
The petition deadline is August 3.
