Attack on Aafia in jail question mark on Nawaz commitment: Fowzia Siddiqui

Karachi, June 09: Attack on Pakistani woman scientist Dr Aafia Siddiqui in the US prison in a big question mark on the commitment of Nawaz Sharif government regarding upholding sovereignty and dignity of Pakistan and Pakistanis, said Dr Fowzia Siddiqui of Aafia Movement Pakistan here Sunday.

She said the recent attack in US jail in which Dr Aafia sustained injuries was a slap across the face of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government that boasts enjoying an absolute majority. She said the lawyer of Dr Aafia, Tina Foster has informed the Siddiqui family in Karachi that past week Dr. Aafia was physically assaulted in her prison cell of Carswell Prison at a US Military base in Fort Worth and left unconscious and bleeding.  She eventually received medical care after two days and intervention by her.

Dr Fowzia Siddiqui said when the PML-N government already has such a heavy mandate what is the reason of its not taking action on Dr Aafia issue. She said the Pakistani nation has pinned high hopes on Mian Nawaz Sharif and it expects that his government would not repeat the apathy and cowardice as shown by the previous regime on Aafia issue.

Fowzia Siddiqui said the new government should have to bring home Aafia Siddiqui within 100 days as per their commitment and hold the head of nation high in pride and dignity.  She said the attack on Dr Aafia in the US prison when the Nawaz Sharif government was taking oath and restarting of drone attacks in Pakistan show the real intentions of the American administration towards Pakistan and our rulers must have to take brave steps to restore the national honor and sovereignty.

She said the case of Dr Aafia would be a test case for the government of Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and he must have to take concrete actions to show the nation that his commitment towards the cause of Pakistanis including Dr Aafia is firm and reliable. She said the past rulers betrayed the cause of Dr Aafia and the Pakistani nation betrayed them in the general elections. She said the new government should avoid falling into the same trap of political expediencies. She said the whole nation awaits Dr Aafia and it is a good opportunity for Mian Nawaz Sharif to bring back Dr Aafia and win the hearts of Pakistanis.
